THE ORIGIN
OF EMERALDS
Most gemstones are the result of a formation process of millions of years in which different minerals found in the magma, in the deepest layers of the earth, cool down and meet due to tectonic movements, suffering a solidification process that culminates in the formation of crystals.
Emeralds, made from beryl and chrome, the latter responsible for their beautiful color, are also the product of those solidification processes. However, although these processes take place in different parts of the world, the geographical location of each one defines certain parameters in their formation, which are responsible for the differences in quality and value between these gems.
In the case of Colombian emeralds, this solidification process happens differently from the rest of the world, since they have a hydrothermal sedimentary origin. This consists of the meeting of saline fluids, also released by tectonic movements, which came into contact with the salts formed by the evaporation of seawater, which is why our emeralds have greater resistance, brightness, purity and a unique green color. deep with bluish tones that makes them unique gems in the world.
In Colombia, the Muzo region, a place inhabited by the indigenous people of the same name, was fortunate to concentrate all these crystal formations, making them the representative gems of the region. This concentration is geographically located between what we now know as the departments of Cundinamarca and Boyacá, with the emerald deposits responsible for the main economic activity in the sector.
The exploitation of this precious stone has changed over time, but its extraction, intended for jewelry and ornamentation, dates back to pre-Columbian times, before the arrival of the Spaniards in the territory and continues to this day, being one of the commercial practices of Colombia's most important exporters, which has become the largest supplier of high-value gems.
The emerald characteristics
There are different factors by which the quality and value of an emerald is measured. The shades of their colors, the number of inclusions in them that increase or decrease their clarity and transparency, the brightness they have, their origin, their weight, their durability and resistance, the type of carving made on them and the number of processing processes. embellishment that each gem required are important indicators for its classification.
Colombian emeralds top the list of compliance with these parameters, which positions them in rarity and commercial demand. This is due to the formation processes of these precious stones in Colombia. Our emeralds have a greater resistance that facilitates their carving process and has a direct impact on their durability and although generically all emeralds are green, those of Colombian origin have variations in hue as a result of their geographical location, they have a beautiful deep green color. , with bluish tones, so rare and exclusive that they are commonly known as "the green spell".
